Disclaimer: Although this verdict is based on evidence, it’s not guaranteed to be correct. I don’t condone steroid-use, but I also don’t judge those who do take them as it’s their own personal choice.
Kali Muscle is an ex-con who spent 7 years in prison for burglary.
Now he has 1.8 million fans on his Facebook account and almost 1 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, where he uploads videos sharing stories about his time behind bars.
During his workouts you can often see him doing calisthenic exercises AKA hanging sideways off a random pole…
Kali has also appeared in some of the greatest TV commercials of all time…
One reason Kali Muscle has become so popular, and at the same time attracted a lot of hate, is because he claims to be 100% natty (see below).
So he clearly states that he doesn't take ‘supplements'. We can assume he's referring to steroids here, but he doesn't directly say ‘I'm not taking steroids'.
Also in videos he says he ‘didn't even know what steroids were' when somebody brought up D-Bol in a conversation in prison. Again he could be telling the truth here…i.e. he just took roids at a later date.
He claims he made the most gains in prison when eating 4,000 calories a day, consisting of endless amounts of tuna and ramen (a japanese noodle soup).
Was tuna and ramen really the key to such extraordinary muscle growth, or has Kali been telling a few white lies?!
His Progress Over the Years
One of the best ways to spot a steroid-user is looking through their pictures to see if they change dramatically at any point during their life. Otherwise known as looking at their gains timeline.
From looking at Kali's transformation video on youtube, he grows a lot between 2009 and 2015. He was huge in 2009, but looked very natural. He had a small waist, no vascularity and small traps.
Small traps are extremely rare in steroid-users as they contain more androgen receptors (like your deltoids), meaning they'll blow up as soon as you start juicing.
The difference in this 8 year transformation:
- Huge increase in vascularity
- His whole body is bigger, but the biggest size gains are in his shoulders and traps.
- His waist looks bigger/more bloated, despite him being more ripped in the second photo.
From looking at this transformation it looks like Kali Muscle IS taking steroids. He even has that synthetic look to his body in the 2015 picture.
Steroids Kali's likely to be taking:
When insulin levels are raised your blood vessels dilate, increasing the amount of nutrients and blood flow to your muscles…the end result? Enhanced vascularity.
This is why bodybuilder's often eat a sugary snack before going on stage when competing.
Boybuilder's take insulin to increase the uptake of amino acids in the muscles, thus increasing protein synthesis.
HGH burns fat and builds muscle. However human growth hormone isn't as anabolic as bulking steroids such as dianabol/anadrol/trenbolone, which is why Kali Muscle didn't gain a huge amount of muscle during these 8 years.
If he were to add dianabol or anadrol into the mix for example, he would've experienced much bigger muscle gains.
The reason why bodybuilders couple HGH and insulin together is because higher doses of HGH cause insulin resistance, causing the body to not use insulin efficiently. Instead of it shuttling nutrients into the muscle cell, there becomes a glucose build up in your blood stream – which can potentially cause diabetes.
Kali had a small, tight waist in 2007. Now he has a distended gut (when he's not breathing in), which is common in modern day bodybuilders. Most people agree that the 70's produced some of the greatest, aesthetically pleasing bodybuilders of all time. Arnold, Frank Zane, Franco Columbo and Lou Ferrigno are just a few icons from that era
These guys had the ‘perfect' shape due to the fine balance of huge muscles and a tiny waist.
Soon after these guys retired, bodybuilders started using HGH and insulin. Consequently bodybuilders grew considerably bigger, but so did their waist lines.
Almost all of the Mr Olympia champions after Lee Haney in the 80's had ‘HGH guts' including: Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler and Phil Heath.
With the exception of Dexter Jackson, who coincidentally is one of the smaller guys in the Mr Olympia.
This steroid combo not only increases the size of your muscles, but your internal organs too; including your heart, liver and intestine.
It's evident that Kali Muscle has also developed an enlarged intestine – see below.
Non-Drug Tested Bodybuilding Shows
Kali Muscle has done several NPC (national physique committee) bodybuilding shows. This is for amateur bodybuilders who are looking to win their pro card, so they can compete in the IFBB.
First of all there is no information about drug testing on the NPC website or about it being a natural competition. And from digging around on a few forums it's pretty well-known that guys who compete in these competitions ARE juicing.
This isn't to say Kali Muscle is on steroids because he competed in the NPC, but if I was that big and 100% natty I would make it clear to the world by competing in the most strict, natural bodybuilding shows (INBA/BNBF). With these federations you have to pass lie detectors, urine tests, blood tests and are subject to random testing throughout the year.
High Blood Pressure
In the video below, when Kali Muscle speaks you'll see/hear him gasp for air in-between talking. This is a sign of high blood pressure and happens because the body is working hard to increase oxygen levels throughout the body. This happens due to less than optimal blood flow to the heart.
Now this spike in blood pressure could be for any reason. However it would make sense if he was taking drugs as insulin has been found to significantly increase blood pressure (1).
Based on the evidence it seems like Kali Muscle could well be taking steroids.
Potential steroids taken…
In terms of drugs used, insulin and HGH are likely culprits. I personally don't understand some people's decision to take drugs, if they're already big naturally. History has proven that bigger isn't always better.
Although it appears Kali isn't being 100% honest with his steroid-use, I don't think people should hate on him, because he's probably well aware that if he were to admit he's taking stuff, his fans would ride bicycles too.
