Clenbuterol, also known as Clen, is in high demand by bodybuilders because of its proven fat burning effects. It has the ability to build lean muscle mass while at the same time reducing body fat – which is a bodybuilder's dream in a nutshell.
However, it does have known side effects and these issues have led to questions like, “Is Clenbuterol safe?” on bodybuilding forums and among bodybuilders in the gym. This important question is addressed below in practical terms.
The Overall Safety of Clenbuterol
First, you should know that Clenbuterol is a beta-2-agonist drug (it stimulates beta 2 receptors) that's commonly prescribed by licensed medical doctors outside the United States. However, it's not prescribed to build muscle and burn fat but rather as a bronchodilator for people who have respiratory issues like asthma.
The recommended dosage when Clenbuterol used for this purpose is 0.02-0.03 milligrams, taken two times a day. Thus the total daily dose is 0.04-0.06 milligrams per day. The vast majority of people who take this recommended quantity do not show significant side effects, although a few do (see side effects below).
Bodybuilders usually take 60 to 120 micrograms of Clenbuterol per day. This is equivalent to 0.06 to 0.12 milligrams per day. So, the lower end of of the typical dosage for bodybuilders is the same as the higher end dosage that doctors usually prescribe for people with asthma.

Does the FDA Think Clenbuterol Is Safe?
In the United States, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) only allows Clenbuterol to be prescribed by veterinarians for horses who have an blocked air passage. It should be noted, however, that many horse owners use it for the “off label” purpose of bulking up their horse to make them stronger. It's also commonly used to bulk up other livestock as well, although this is not considered a legal way to use Clenbuterol in the United States.
When some doctors are asked why the FDA has not approved Clenbuterol for human use, they talk about the fact Clenbuterol is a generic drug, and therefore, not a highly profitable one due to no patent. If it were patented, the patent holder would probably petition the FDA to allow humans to legally use it. In all likelihood, it would probably be approved; at least for respiratory purposes.
What Are the Side Effects of Clenbuterol?
Most of the known side effects of Clenbuterol are neurological and cardiovascular in nature. The most common side effects are heart palpitations, tachycardia, muscle tremors, anxiety, agitation, and nervousness. It can also cause dry mouth, insomnia, dizziness, headache, high blood pressure, and excessive sweating. In people prone to psychological issues, Clenbuterol can exacerbate these conditions. In rare instances, especially at high dosages, Clenbuterol can cause heart attacks.
Why Female Bodybuilders Like Clenbuterol
Clenbuterol does not produce the typical androgenic side effects that other steroids cause like the growth of facial hair or the deepening of the voice. Therefore, female bodybuilders often find this to be a safer way to build their muscles without becoming overly masculine.
How to Safely Cycle Clenbuterol?
To increase both safety and effectiveness, most bodybuilders use Clenbuterol in cycles. For example, they may take it for two weeks and then go off it for two weeks and so on. Other bodybuilders use it only short term to burn off that last little bit of fat they can't seem to get rid of any other way.
Some bodybuilders will have longer cycles off it than on it. For example, they may take it for two weeks and then discontinue it for six weeks and so on. Generally speaking, most bodybuilders consider Clenbuterol safer if used in cycles or used only for a short time period when you really need it to bust through a fat loss plateau.
Is clenbuterol safe? Some clen-users may tell you it's perfectly safe, but we know that it does have the power to increase your blood pressure. So the truth is somewhere in the middle and ultimately different for every individual. Thus, if you have known heart issues, psychological problems, or anxiety issues, you'll need to be more careful with Clenbuterol and watch out for any side effects.
Also just because clenbuterol might be safe, doesn't mean it's good for you. It almost certainly will damage your health at least to a small degree.
If you've never taken Clenbuterol before and don't know how your body and mind will react, you may want to start with a small dosage, about 20 micrograms a day which is usually one tablet. You'll need to be careful about what other drugs (steroids) you take at the same time too – because they can have additive effects.
